Notes on Customization of Blythe Dolls: HAIR

HAIR

The factory hair on some dolls can be very problematic.

Even if it appears to be soft and silky upon arrival, and out of the box ... over time, it can become coarse and knotted ... even if your doll just sits there...

The Blythe dolls have a better head of hair than their Clone sisters.  The Blybe / CCE clones' hair can be choppy, uneven, and sparse.  The hair on the Little Big Eyes dolls are slightly better quality, but not by much.  Their bangs are cut very strangely, too close to the brow, and just look "cheap".

The BEST and most expensive or time-consuming method, would obviously be a re-root.  I have seen tons of the most BEAUTIFUL re-roots on flickr ... I love the alpaca "wild" mohair look ... but I also LOVE the saran-type SILKY ones, too! 

THIS is one area that I think I WOULD spend money on a professional :)

There are other options of course:

Cut your dolls' hair.  If you don't know how, there are a few remote sites that show you.  I already know the basics of hair-cutting, due to a cosmetology background, so I just trimmed the girls hair.  You just have to remember;  synthetic plastic is way different than real human hair (PLUS it is obviously less forgiving, in that ... it will NOT grow back!)

There are also WIGS out there.  I have seen them on the auction sites, but not seen one in person, so can not vouch for their effect.  I added extensions on two of my girls, but I don't think that is a good solution ... only temporary ...

The easiest way to alter a dolls hair would be a BOIL PERM.

I don't know why a big deal is made of this process ... it could not be more simple.  Just put the dolls hair in rollers, or bend it around the bendable sort of curlers.  You can even use a pipecleaner for a different effect.  I used curlers on most, and BRAIDS on one of my lemon haired LBE dolls. 

If you want to straighted just the bangs, just tape them down and submerge ONLY bangs in boiling water

Braids in progress:  Start in middle;  Braid the ends ... to keep hair in EVEN amounts

Step One:  Braid or Put hair in curlers ...

After water is boiled, simply pour into a GLASS bowl/ container, large enough to cover the area of hair you are changing.  Slowly put HAIR into the boiling water, and leave it there for 5-7 minutes.  (I propped up my girl so I wouldn't have to stand there holding her over the bowl.)

Rinse the hair with COLD water, and then let dry.  I recommend at least 3 days of allowing the hair to dry and set into place.

Rinse with cold water;  then LET DRY ... FOR DAYS

MY ADG Aztec Arrival came with super long hair, which proceeded to get tangled and knotted during the make-over process, even though I was trying to protect it all the while ...

This is after the FIRST boil perm I gave her ... It looks pretty here ... but then it was just TOO much ... TOO BUSHY!

Notes on Customization of Blythe Dolls: SAND-MATTE

This section / My notes on SAND-MATTE (SANDMATTING):

First, the "Clones":

DUE to the fact that clones are made of EXTREMELY HARD SHINY PLASTIC (picture a board game piece) which does NOT “give” …. Sand matte just does not work with a few swipes of a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  No.  You have to SAND THE HELL out of this type of surface for it to become anywhere near matte, and see any progress.

 Compared to the clones, the Blythe doll that I have was a piece of CAKE.  The TEXTURE that is.  The COLOR is another matter.  But only for the doll I purchased;  an ADG which is KNOWN to have a “green” tint.  First thing I did in my research;  LOOK for examples from others who have solved this problem and how did they do it???  Results of my research:  FOUND NO ONE.  Sure, I have seen a few ADGs that don’t APPEAR to be all that GREEN in their photos … but then, that is not really “telling”, due to photoshop and the other myriad of ways to alter photos these days.

            WHAT DID I DO?  I sanded her face with a VERY COARSE nail file (emery board) I already had.  Yes, I DID.  Just got out my little nail kit that I have had since the days I first began doing my own (acrylic style) nails, waaaay back in the early 80’s, and used the most coarse emory board style file I could find (the kind you get at Sally Beauty, NOT the metal kind of file).  . 

I was NOT AFRAID for one second.  Probably because and due to the fact that I did not pay thousands of dollars for my Blythe.  I got my little Aztec Arrival for about $125., which I think was “reasonable”.  I could have gotten a nude one for less probably, but I wanted my FIRST ONE to have a box and all its original trappings.  And call me crazy, but I wanted to purchase her from a U.S. Seller.  I am obviously not fearful of ordering from overseas, I have gotten my Blybe-type clones there as well as some shoes and stockings.  I just wanted to be able to TRACK my purchase if anything should go wrong in the transit.  (and being an ebay buyer and seller for over 10 years, I KNOW all the things that CAN and DO go wrong in transit!!!)

            Okay, so I sanded the heck out of her face, in the hopes that the GREEN TINT did not go “through and through”.  However, after I did this, and washed off all the dust, I swear, SHE IS STILL GREEN!  ARGH!  I thought perhaps I should just make a Wicked Witch of the West out of her, with a cute little black dress and stripe socks, and of course, the stolen Ruby Slippers … and believe me, I WOULD HAVE, had this not been MY FIRST REAL BLYTHE …

            I ended up just PASTELING THE HELL OUT OF HER FACE  (with chalk).  She looks like she has a “QT” bottle tan (remember that stuff they sold in the early days, which turned everyone ORANGE?) but to me, anything was better than the GREEN!  And with the beautiful red hair, I really did not want to make her face ‘white’ (I don’t know how to do that either!). 

            So, now she is ORANGE, like her hair.

Notes on Customization of Blythe Dolls: EYES: EYE LIDS

This section is on EYELIDS:

Little Big Eyes Dolls:  As far as I can see, it is not possible for these dolls to have "sleep eyes" ... i.e., a time where they can appear to have their eyes closed.  With these dolls, their eyes are always OPEN.  Even when the eye changing button is pushed, there is very little eyelid visible.

Blythe Dolls:  I have seen some very, very talented artists paint some awesome designs on these dolls eyelids.  I did read that to successfully do this, you must either have an airbrush set-up, or sand down enough of the eyelid to make up for the layer of paint for the design.

I did not attempt this process.  I did try to paint my Blybe's eyelids black ... and I thinned out the paint as much as possible, but I just did not like the visible brushstrokes.  Perhaps at a later time I could attempt this step, but I believe the experts:  You need to do all the steps correctly, or the paint / art / design will "rub" against the eye mech when pull ring is used.

This is my Blybe (Blythe Clone) doll ... I painted her eyelids black ... knowing that this may happen:  I do not have an airbrush system ... so I used thin paint ... but the brushstrokes are still visible ... and NOT DESIRABLE ;)

Notes on Customization of Blythe Dolls: EYES: EYE LASHES

THIS SECTION will be all about EYE LASHES:

First of all, I HATE the factory lashes.  I just don’t like them AT ALL.

I knew right off the bat, they were ALL going …. Real Blythe and Clones alike.

            LBE’s lashes came RIGHT OUT, no problem.  LBE lashes are BROWN.  They are attached BEHIND the eyelid, and not inside a “slit” like real Blythe and Blybe.

Obviously the eye mech is also completely different on an LBE doll, as it is not controlled with a string and tiny spring, but a massive, huge spring that is connected to a BUTTON on the back of her head.  This button also has a sticker attached with the words:  PUSH HERE.  Not kidding. 

            So, REPLACE ALL EYELASHES.  Sounds easy enough …. But OH NO !  So sorry Cheap Girl, but You bought yourself an ADG as your first Blythe … the one with the eyelashes SUPER-GLUED IN!!!! 

            After removing the LBE lashes and the Blybe lashes without incident … I tried the real Blythe.  NOPE.  Not coming out.  For anything. 

So, what does Cheap (stupid) girl do?  Yep, I got out my ACETONE and proceeded to try and get them out with a Q-tip soaked in acetone!  Yikes!!!  So of course the acetone proceeded to eat up the plastic.  For some bizarre reason, maybe perhaps due to all the other sh—I have been through, I could not find myself to CARE!  I just thought, oh great, whatever!  And truthfully … THE ACETONE DID NOT EVEN WORK !!!!!  I ended up with a MANGLED EYE MECH, and never got all the pieces of lashes out, or whatever it is they have in there!  THIS all and mainly due to the fact that I could not find ANYWHERE on line, any helpful hints regarding the lashes of The Ashton Drake Galleries BLYTHE dolls!

            Not to worry, I told Nenetl (her name) … I will still make you BEAUTIFUL!!!  WHO CARES if your eyelids are all mangled?  When I get done, no one will even NOTICE !

SEE!  You can hardly tell she has mangled eyelids ... don't look TOO closely  ;)

            ACTUAL LASHES:  WHY pay $5. or more for a pair of “Blythe eyelashes” …. When you can go to the 99 Cent Store and get them there?  I purchased 15 pair, because I planned to double-up on them, and to me, one of the smartest thing that this Cheap Girl has found for her Girls !

           BLYTHE DOLL;  INSTALLING LASHES:  Just a bit more difficult ... due to the fact that even though there was a "slit" for installing the lashes, I found this to be too limiting a space for the effect I was going for. 

            LBE DOLLS;  INSTALLING LAHSES:  I KNEW that the original stock lashes were installed BEHIND the eyelid, so I applied a TEENY-TINY bit of tacky glue on each lash (eyelash glue DOES NOT STICK to plastic) and of course the lashes are NOT going to stay in a curved position while drying, so I had to use straight pins stuck into her eye ... to anchor each one down with 3 pins at a time for a few minutes, before moving on to the next lash …. X 7 dolls … 2 eyes each …. Deep sigh.

            ON Blybe:  DUE to the fact that the plastic is SO HARD, and NOT PLIABLE IN THE LEAST, even inserting a pin in each side was not working.  And of COURSE I broke one of her eye slits too, because the pin just slipped and chipped the plastic.  Again, here’s me:  WHAT.EVER.

            On ADG BLYTHE:  AFTER totally anhiliating the eye mech … (have you ever seen plastic treated with acetone in addition to a person digging into it with a dull exacto tool? ) … I decided to just GLUE THE LASHES ON TOP of the supposed “slit” that was now more like a big trough, but not an empty trough … a trough filled with ?  whatever the heck they put in ADG eyelash slots!  Could not get that crap out for ANYTHING!  So, on top of the slit AREA, I glued one row of lashes.  THEN, on top of THAT, I glued ANOTHER ROW of lashes.  And if I need to, I will PAINT part of the eye mech BLACK ... sort of like an eyeliner ...to further try and hide any traces of what I have destroyed.  Poor, POOR, Blytheeeee !

EYE CHIPS for Blythe and Blythe - Like/Type  Clones:

            First of all, let me say, I LOVE all those beautiful, sparking, fantastic colored eye chips out there!  And the ones that look like REAL EYEBALLS?  Well, those are AMAZING!!!  The artists that can hand paint a chip to make it look like a real eye … just fantastic. 

            Here is my problem:  I AM POOR.  Well, not exactly, but I AM in debt, and on a budget!  So, spending $4.-$5. for ONE PAIR of chips …. Times 10 dolls that I have … times they each have 4 pair …. Would be MINIMUM EXPENSE OF $ 200.  JUST for the cheap-o looking ones that I don’t even like all that much, because I have a problem with the “spokes”.  Okay, so that is just me … please don’t be offended if you prefer those, we all have our individual preferences J  OH, and if I were to purchase the hand-painted, realistic looking ones, for $20. a pair …. Times 10 dollies  …. Times 4 each … $80. per doll, x 10 …. $800. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Really ???????

            So, what is the CHEAP GIRL do?  I already knew there was NO WAY I was keeping those hideous eye chips the way they are ….

 MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE STOCK EYE CHIPS THAT CAME WITH EACH DOLL TYPE:

            Blybe type clones:  The CCE dolls chips were SO cheap looking, even compared to the “Blybe” Basaak clone, it was not funny.  (the very first one I tried to take out, but ONLY after I had put the poor girl in the hospital and knew she was a gonner … broke in half right off the bat with the gluestick method.)  The Blybe clone’s eyes were “so so” and very similar to the Real Blythe’s … EXCEPT that the pupil is MUCH smaller, just MAGNIFYING that “deer in the headlights” that I can’t deal with.  JUST can not.

            LBE:  A domed piece of plastic, in a dull boring color, with absolutely NO life, NO spark, even SPOKES would be better than these chips.  They are dull, lifeless and just not acceptable.  I think the blank eye socket painted with a Sharpie marker would be better than these chips (!)   I took them ALL out of all the 7 LBE dolls, soaked them in rubbing alcohol per the Pucci tutorial, let them soak overnight and brushed them all clean.  I put one pair BACK into my “guinea pig” and added FOIL (again, here, as the Cheap Girl … I used some old Christmas wrapping paper from circa 2001 … ), added more BLACK to the pupil, and took a comparison shot next to another LBE, and there is some improvement.

 SO, after I purchased too many of these dolls, I knew I had to do "something" ... so LET THE RESEARCH BEGIN! 

Started searching on etsy, ebay, and all over the internet ... and saw some AMAZING ones on flickr ... and my reaction was:     

         

“WOW !  Those hand-painted eye chips look SO cool! … but ... $20.00 for one pair?  Oh geez ..."

And like the thrifty little resourseful person that I have always been ... began to wonder ... HOW did THEY learn to do this?  I searched until my brain was fried and my fingers were numb ... but for the life of me, I could not discover ANYWHERE where there was even a tutorial, a "how-to", a class I could join ... NOTHING!  This still has the ability to perplex me, to this day ... I mean, HOW DID THEY learn how???

That is when I had to realize that I was either going to have to fork over BIG BUCKS, or think of another solution to changing my girls' eye chips ... knowing FULL WELL that I had not the materials, nor the resources or equipment, much less the TALENT for painting what I saw as some more beautiful than life-like eyechips I had seen... 

But whatever I could come up with, seriously couldn’t be much worse than the hideous spokes of the Blythe~Blybe or the dull and boring of the LBE …..

            SO…… I began MAKING EYE CHIPS! 

I know, I know …. How very ridiculous.  And if you look closely, they are very amateur …. But… it was either that, or SPEND $800. for what I REALLY wanted ! 

  HERE are some of the methods I used:         

I took the stock eye chips and PAINTED RIGHT OVER THEM!  I also figured, heck, if I didn’t like them, I could just remove the paint with alcohol, and nothing would be lost (except for my time and frustration, of course).  Then, I even took SEWING BUTTONS out of my “bag of tricks” already on hand for my crochet creations, and PAINTED ON TOP OF THOSE, and topped with varnish!  And again, ad naseum, if thought to myself .... if I had this idea, I am sure TONS of people have had this idea !  so I know I am not original in my “cheap-ness” J

           

LITTLE BIG EYES DOLLS:  4 NEW SETS OF EYECHIPS;  HANDMADE BY ME

Notes on Customization of Blythe Dolls: EYES: EYE CHIPS REMOVAL

Starting with the EYE CHIPS ... then, the EYELASHES ... the EYE MECHANISM which includes the EYELIDS.

Please note these are only MY experiences, as an amateur.  A lot of customization hints and tricks can be found on websites and the like, but in all my research, I also found there was so much needed information that was LEFT OUT.  Things that you come up against, that are just never addressed.

Also note:  I only own ONE real Blythe doll;  an ADG.  From what I read, the Ashton Drake Galleries Blythes are made a bit differently than the other Blythe models, so I can only speak on what I know.

I am a bit more knowledgeable in "customizing" my little CLONE girls:  LITTLE BIG EYES (LBE) ...

Basically, for all these type dolls, using the GLUE STICK method is the way to go.

I already had glue sticks ... not the huge ones ... but they worked out okay.    I used a candle, as opposed to a lighter, so I could have both hands free.  Simply hold the gluestick over the flame ... not too close ... for about 6-7 seconds, twirling it all the while.  Then, try and center it onto the eyechip and hold in place until it does not droop.  (I sometimes used something to prop them up in case they did want to droop.) 

At the point I removed my girls eyechips, I either had ALREADY removed their stock eyelashes, or I did not care if any glue dripped onto the eyelashes, as I planned to remove them later.

Let the glue sticks dry completely.  Then, give a slight "twist" motion when you pull on gluestick, and they should just pop out.  I do believe that fatter glue sticks would work better, because on some of my attempts, the glue stick stuck to the eyechip, and I pulled off the "end" of the glue stick only, and I had to start over.

Also, on Blybe / Basaak models:  The eyechips are REALLY stuck in there, and good.  I had to make several attempts at removing them (the CCE model was easier, the Blybe model is more difficult).  There was even some remnants of chip that stayed in the eye socket, and I just carefully removed with an exacto knife ... CAREFULLY !  :)

EYECHIPS on the ADG Blythe girls are ALSO very difficult to remove.  Also, her eyechips broke when removing them and not only were there pieces that remained in the socket, but, the actual socket had little "HOLES" in it !  This is quite normal, and not to panic ... This will be covered up with the NEW eyechips.

IF you have a lot of trouble, there IS information on the web regarding using a "hot screw" method ... which obviously totally damages the eyechip, but if you are removing them, most likely you plan to REPLACE, so that should not be too much of an issue.

Crochet sidetrack

Inbetween trying to get my dolly "models" ready to be presentable with their little dolly make-overs, I do occasionally take little side-trips, when my friends and family have occasions to celebrate ...

Here are some of my crochet creations I have made specifically for each person, for their specific event so far this year of 2011 ...


My girlfriend's daughter had her Quincenera in May, so I made her this little mini-version of her ballgown:




It is a halter style dress, hanging on its own tiny little silver clothes hanger,
embellished with a floral motif.

I also have a friend who celebrated her birthday in JUNE, so I made her one of my copyright BIRTHSTONE CUPCAKES, featuring Birthstone for June:  PEARL

This SHAMROCK CUPCAKE was created for my niece, who is our very own Family LEPRECHAUN, as she was not only born on St. Patrick's Day, but ... she has RED HAIR! 

She (my niece) also likes sock monkeys, for some reason ?, and at Christmas time, I told her I would make her one.  I think he turned out SO CUTE!  This is my own pattern:

In February, my Daughter's Mother had a birthday, and I made her an "Amethyst Birthstone" cupcake:

FEBRUARY is also VALENTINE'S DAY, and since I am probably my only Valentine, I made these little pins to wear to work that day (they are a tiny bit over 1 inch in diameter):

I also have quite a few people in my life who celebrate their Birthday in JANUARY ... A male co-worker;  a female co-worker;  my nephew, and my new Daughter (okay, she is my "Daughter-in-Law", but I like the term DAUGHTER much more :)

I made this for my male co-worker:
It is my own copyright design;  a FOOTBALL (FACE) SWEATER
which I inserted a store-bought car-room-drawer freshner card,
so he could not only use it where he wanted to,
but when it runs out of fragrance,
he can replace it with his own preference.

GARNET is Birthstone for JANUARY, so I used garnet color yarn,
and I added little "confetti" sprinkles,
which are actually tiny little brads used for scrapbooking.
Added the face too, of course :)



For this little mini-BIRTHDAY CAKE, I used an actual version of a pattern.
It did not come out as well as it could have,
but I gave it to my friend anyway ;)
It is sitting on top of an upturned wine goblet stem/bottom.

NOW, I really must return to the business of INTRODUCING my newly made-over little models, and then start crocheting like MAD, so that I can open my new on-line storefront.  Hopefully there will be interest in my designs and items I plan to offer for (mostly) Blythe Doll lovers :)
